In the wild, there’s a fascinating insect called the processionary caterpillar. It blindly follows the one ahead of it, no matter the destination—even if it means walking in circles until it dies from exhaustion or hunger.
French naturalist Jean-Henri Fabre once placed several of these caterpillars in a circle. They marched in endless loops for days—starving—despite having food just inches away. They couldn’t think beyond the pattern. They simply followed.
Sadly, many of us live the same way.
We follow cultural expectations, outdated norms, and inherited routines without question. “This is how it’s always been done,” we say, even when better options are right in front of us. We mimic family, school, religious, and social traditions without pausing to ask: Does this still make sense?
From careers to beliefs, many people walk in mental circles, missing the “pine needles” of purpose and opportunity right before them.
It’s not always our fault—we’re wired from childhood to imitate what we see and hear. But as adults, responsibility shifts. We must challenge the status quo if we want better results.
As Seth Godin said, “The riskiest thing you can do is play it safe.” He was thrown out of the marketing association for introducing permission marketing. A few years later, they invited him back and recognized the genius they once rejected.
Just because something is popular doesn’t make it right. And just because you were born into a pattern doesn’t mean you must die in it.
Ask the hard questions:
- Why am I doing this?
- What’s the result?
- Is there a better way?
Your future depends on it.
