There’s a phrase that has held more people back than failure ever could:
“This is how we’ve always done it.”
It sounds safe. It feels respectful. But often, it’s a cage disguised as culture.
From medical institutions to religious systems, history is filled with examples of people clinging to outdated methods while the truth stared them in the face.
Take Dr. Alice Stewart. She discovered in the 1950s that x-raying pregnant women was linked to childhood cancer. She published her findings and won awards. Yet, it took the medical community 25 years to stop the practice. Twenty-five years of avoidable deaths—just because no one wanted to challenge the norm.
That’s the Processionary Caterpillar Syndrome at play: doing things the old way even when it’s no longer helpful, even harmful.
In school, we wait to finish our education before thinking about earning an income. Why? Because that’s what everyone does. Yet some of the most successful people began exploring business while in school—not after.
The truth is, tradition is not always wisdom.
Galileo challenged the belief that the earth was the center of the universe. For that, he was placed under house arrest for nine years. It took centuries for the Church to admit he was right.
Innovation always offends tradition.
If something is no longer serving you or your future, it’s time to let it go.
Don’t be loyal to systems that were built for survival, not success. Be loyal to progress.
