There’s so much more to the things around us which we normally take for granted. The realization of what they hold and their importance not only leaves us more knowledgeable than before but also ushers us into levels of authority based on that knowledge. I am a Christian and firmly believe this to be the case in our walk with Christ Jesus.
So now I’ve got a question. When was the last time you took a moment to think about the alphabets? To give them at least a fleeting thought? You realize that language, communication, education, development and so much more would be utterly impossible without the alphabets. And yet we take them for granted. Imagine having to ask for something from a friend using gestures every day. Life would be an unending game of charades. This only points to the importance of the alphabet.
What is an alphabet then? Thank God for Wikipedia. An alphabet is a standard set of letters (basic written symbols or graphemes) which is used to write one or more languages based on the general principle that the letters represent phonemes (basic significant sounds) of the spoken language. This is in contrast to other types of writing systems, such as syllabaries (in which each character represents a syllable) and logographies (in which each character represents a word, morpheme, or semantic unit).
The Proto-Canaanite script, later known as the Phoenician Alphabet is the first fully phonemic script. The Phoenician alphabet is therefore considered to be the first alphabet and is the ancestor of most modern alphabets, including Arabic, Greek, Latin, Cyrillic, Hebrew and possibly Brahmic. According to terminology introduced by Peter T. Daniels, an “alphabet” is a script that represents both vowels and consonants as letters equally. In this narrow sense of the word the first “true” alphabet was the Greek alphabet. Greek civilization was the blueprint on which modern civilization was built on; i.e. the Roman Empire and subsequent civilizations. Latin, the most popular of modern alphabets is derived from the Greek alphabet. The modern English alphabet is a Latin alphabet.
With our crash course on alphabets complete I would like us to look at a piece of scripture. Revelation 1:8, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” Amen. Two words here capture my attention; Alpha and Omega. What do they mean? Now we have to realize that the Book of Revelation was written circa A.D. 95 by the apostle John and that the predominant language at that time was Greek. In the Greek alphabet Alpha was the first letter whereas Omega was the last letter. Why would the Lord choose to use such letters to describe Himself? I believe it was so because of the importance attached to these letters; all other letters of the Greek alphabet were found within Alpha and Omega. In effect Jesus was saying He was the Alpha and Omega and everything else within. He is literally every letter of the Greek alphabet; the most widely used alphabet of the known world at that time.
Now I’m not being narrow minded and limiting the Lord here but I’m rather building to something. You have to realize that every single word is formed by letters taken from the alphabet. Your name, the words you think and speak are formed from letters between Alpha and Omega. There is nothing under and above the sun that has no name. With this in mind you see that all that is in existence is from and of God. Based on this understanding one might ask if all acts of evil are of God. The answer is no; God is a good and just God. The existence of evil in our world is due to the fall of man where dominion over the earth was given to Lucifer who sought to corrupt and destroy the good that God had made. Jesus in John 10:10 rightly puts it, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
Back to the significance of our Lord using Alpha and Omega in Revelation 1:8, Colossians 1:16 says, “For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him.” Isn’t it awesome knowing this? John 1:3, “All things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made.” John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Would I be wrong to say, “In the beginning was the Alpha and Omega, and the Alpha and Omega was with God, and the Alpha and Omega was God?” A great sense of pride and faith is gotten just by knowing this; all things made were given a name, a name made of letters taken from the alphabet but without the alphabet there would be no letters for a name, hence no name, hence non-existent. In effect nothing exists outside Alpha and Omega; nothing exists outside the Word; nothing exists outside God.
Let us focus for a while on that which can be found within God, within the Alpha and Omega. Using the modern English alphabet, we have 26 letters which can be combined to form words. Even the letters “A” and “I” are words on their own. Now follow me here, words such as power, love, health, wealth, wisdom, authority, life all have letters that fall within the English alphabet; within Alpha and Omega. Likewise words such as hate, envy, death, deceit, sad also fall within Alpha and Omega. Bear with me as I go further; as these words fall within the domain of the Alpha and Omega, the just and faithful God, are they not subject to His authority? Hence He promotes love, power and wealth while abolishing hate, death and sad. As these are found within Him, He has power over them. The Alpha and Omega who is a God of Love backs and supports that which would bring life to His creation and abolishes all evil from the hearts of His family. The mind blowing truth is as a Christian, as my Father is in control of all that is, I also have control being His son and an heir to His Kingdom through His Son Jesus Christ. I have the authority over good and evil and can boldly proclaim what I want to see because my proclamations are not just mere words but truths that are found in my Alpha and Omega. Once I speak I speak God into a situation.
It is therefore of paramount importance that I diligently guard my tongue and thoughts and speak life. James 3 behoves us to keep our tongues in check because the tongue can defile the whole body and sets on fire the course of nature (verse 6).
With this in mind, I implore you to seek the Word, the Alpha and Omega through His Word the Bible to mature into newer and greater levels of authority and to learn to keep your utterances in check. God is faithful, God is true, and God is love. God bless you. Amen.
