From the moment we are born, we are influenced by societal norms, traditions, and institutions that tell us what to believe, how to behave, and what success should look like. But what if some of these teachings are holding us back instead of helping us grow?
The seven pillars of culture—family, religion, education, media, entertainment, politics, and societal expectations—shape our identities and choices. While they provide structure and guidance, they can also be sources of limitation and control. The key to true independence is learning to navigate these influences without being misled by fear, bias, or outdated beliefs.
So how do we break free from cultural programming and take charge of our own lives? It starts with awareness and intentional action.
1️ Think Critically – Question Everything, Even Long-Held Beliefs
Many people accept societal norms without ever questioning their origins or validity. But growth requires critical thinking—the ability to ask, “Does this belief serve me? Is this truly what I want for my life, or am I just following the crowd?”
Challenge assumptions. Not everything that has been taught for generations is still relevant today. The world is evolving, and so should our understanding of it.
2️ Diversify Perspectives – Learn from Multiple Sources, Not Just Mainstream Voices
Most people only consume information from the sources they are familiar with—whether it’s news channels, religious leaders, or family traditions. But real wisdom comes from seeking diverse viewpoints. Read books, engage in discussions, listen to people from different backgrounds, and expose yourself to new ideas. Expanding your perspective allows you to think independently rather than being confined to one-sided narratives.
3️ Self-Education – Learn Financial Literacy, Emotional Intelligence, and Creativity on Your Own
One of the biggest flaws of formal education is that it rarely teaches the skills that truly determine success. Schools focus on academics, but they often ignore:
✔ Financial literacy – Understanding money, investing, and wealth-building.
✔ Emotional intelligence – Managing relationships, handling adversity, and self-awareness.
✔ Creativity & problem-solving – Thinking outside the box and adapting to change.
The most successful people don’t stop learning when they leave school—they continue to self-educate in areas that schools fail to cover.
4️ Live Authentically – Choose a Life Aligned with Your Purpose, Not Society’s Expectations
Many people build their lives based on what society expects of them—pursuing careers they don’t love, following traditions they don’t believe in, and chasing success as defined by others. But true fulfillment comes from living a life that aligns with your values, passions, and unique purpose.
John Allston once said, “If you don’t control your mind, someone else will.” This is a powerful reminder that if we don’t take charge of our beliefs, actions, and goals, society will shape them for us. The cost of blindly following cultural norms is living a life that feels unfulfilling and disconnected from who we truly are.
The world is full of opinions, traditions, and ideologies that attempt to define success, happiness, and purpose. But in the end, you are responsible for deciding which influences you accept and which ones you leave behind.
