Foreword

By Mr. James Ebo Whyte (Uncle Ebo)
CEO of ‘Roverman Productions,’ and of JoyFM’s ‘Food for thought’ fame.

In 1981, I was employed by Asempa Publishers as the Publications Officer and later, Creative and Soliciting Editor, and my job was to find writers to generate manuscripts for us to publish. In pursuit of my obligation to the company, I traveled the length and breadth of Ghana looking for writers and I did not find many. The few I came across did not have any material that spoke to the felt needs of the people. I took to organising Writers’ Workshops in the hope of developing the kind of writers Ghana needed. I was not too successful at it because most of those who flock to Writers Workshops will never write anything publishable. Those who really want to get published do not attend workshops and conferences; they write. But I never gave up searching for writers who will speak to the needs of Ghana.

I have taken the trouble of giving you the foregoing as a background for you to understand that I do not take the privilege of writing this Foreword lightly. For me, as one who has spent a lifetime searching and raising writers, I am thrilled that there seems to be an emergence of a crop of new and young writers in Ghana who have something worthwhile to say and David Egyir is definitely one of them.

The fact is, what makes Ghana a Third World country is not just its material underdevelopment; what makes Ghana a Third World country is also the lack of books written by Ghanaians that will help shift the paradigm of the Ghanaian from a Third World and hopeless mentality to a winner and (to borrow David’s concept for this book) an eagle mentality.

This book, ‘The EAGLE in You,’ carries a message that is timely and pertinent for Ghana and the Ghanaian. If a prosperous and developed country like the USA needed the inspiration of Barack Obama’s “Yes We Can,” then Ghana [Africa, and the world*] surely needs David’s message that a great and fulfilling life is within the reach of all of us.

For now, let me not stand in the way of you reading the book. All I want to say at this point is that, an inspirational and motivational feast awaits you in the pages of the book. Enjoy it, savor it and let it nourish in you the incredible life that is your right as a human being created in God’s image and your responsibility as a person with a unique destiny to fulfill.

Preface

By David K Egyir (Dave)
Author | Architect, Designer, Life Coach

Hi, Seer!

I call you ‘Seer’ because you come across as someone who ‘sees’ a wonderful future for yourself, and you’re taking steps to achieve it; in other words, you have Vision!

Seer, this manual is primarily to empower you to achievemore than you ever thought possible for yourself. It is a comprehensive and excellent guide for life, designed to save you time and stress.

A Call to Climb Higher

Seer, I may not know who you are, but based on research carried out by Harvard University and other institutions, there is about 80 percent likelihood that you personally underestimate your capabilities and use very little of your inborn potential. Seer, this is one of the most difficult facts to accept, but it’s just the resultant effect of the mainstream educational system. Harvard’s research revealed that, school teaches just about 22 percent of what people require to be exceptionally effective and trulysuccessful. That’s perhaps the main reason why a person has to be interviewed for a job, otherwise certificates of excellent performance would be enough. Seer, this book will help you to evaluate yourself and get to know whether or not you are using much of your inborn potential, and if not, guide you to do so.

Why the Book / Manual was Written

To complement formal education, by teaching how to live meaningfully and make a meaningful living!

When growing up, Seer, it is ideal and relevant that someone should explain life to you comprehensively enough; but this is usually not the case. Hardly do you get someone qualified enough to tell you what’s really important where and when, and show you how to organise your life to be more efficient, make great impact and enjoy true happiness. What you likely get is the classical one, “Go to school, study hard, pass your exams well and get a good, well-paying job!” Good advice; however, not enough! Prof. Sir, William Arthur Lewis once said, “Education and schooling are not the same thing. What goes on inside the schools are not always education, and the result may well be to reduce productive capacity rather than to increase it.” He was largely right, and that is why the maxim, “Life is lived forwards but understood backwards” is largely true, and therefore worrying!

Research indicates that majority of people underestimate their true capabilities and do not use much of their inborn potential; most of us settle for far less than we deserve and are indeedcapable of achieving in life. This has variously been blamed on the over-emphasis on formal education to the inadvertent neglect of informal education.

This book was written in response; to adequately address these issues.

The Nature of the Book / Manual

Conversational writing style employing relatively simple English has been used to make it more informal and personal, Seer. In some cases, the masculine gender has been used in the generic sense, in which case it is gender-neutral and may thus represent both male and female. Where the masculine gender within a sentence refers to God, the initial letter is capitalised.

Enjoy!

Brief Excerpt...

Self-Image

Your self-image (also known as your self-concept) refers to the way you ‘see’ or ‘perceive’ your own self at the fundamental level. It may also be referred to as self-esteem. It is the bundle of beliefs you have about yourself and your personal world as a result of all the issues discussed above; from social-conditioning to your inner-dialogue.

Your self-image determines your levels of performance and effectiveness in everything you do, so it is important that you develop a good self-image. The underlying principle is that when you see yourself as deserving, you will easily do what is necessary to attain those things – no matter how difficult or inconvenient. However, if you see yourself as unworthy or undeserving, you will naturally be unwilling to do what is necessary to attain those things. You’ll end up not taking the necessary positive actions, and so you’ll remain mediocre. Your human makeup is such that you’ll always perform in a manner consistent with the way you see yourself.

Seer, supposing we put a timber plank across two solid concrete blocks on the ground and ask you to walk on it from one end to the other end, you’ll not have any difficulty at all; you’ll easily do it. However, if we should place the same plank from one balcony of an apartment on the fourth floor of a high-rise building to the balcony of another apartment opposite it, walking on the plank from one balcony to the opposite balcony would be a different story. The reason is that in the earlier scenario you ‘see’ yourself easily and safely walking across without any serious implications so you’ll actually be able to walk on it without difficulty. In the case of the storey buildings however, you ‘see’ yourself easily falling; you imagine the consequences as severe and so doing it becomes difficult or impossible. It’s all a matter of what you ‘picture’ in your mind!

For hundreds of years, and until 1954, no athlete had been able to run 1-mile distance in less than 4 minutes. Experts analysed and gave so many reasons why humans could never do the mile in less than 4 minutes. Some argued that the bone structure of humans made it impossible, and others said humans lacked sufficient lung power, and that, the capacity of the heart could not afford it – and all that. All these speculations were fostered by the news media, and the final consensus was that, running the mile in less than 4 minutes was beyond the physical capacity of a human being. They believed (erroneously though) that humans were not created to run faster than that.

The athletes never gave up trying; but sadly, their self-images were that ‘they were incapable of running the mile in less than 4 minutes.’ An athlete might probably be so determined and say to the world, “I’m going to run a mile in less than 4 minutes!” However, with all the media and experts’ speculations that had gone on, the inner-dialogue could possibly be: “Huh! I know it’s impossible but I’ll try. However, the best I’ve ever done is 4:06; I can’t break the record. In fact, the experts have analysed it scientifically and are sure about it; that humans don’t have the physical capacity to run fast enough to do a mile in less than 4 minutes, so what’s the point. And I remember the Doctor’s warning that if I try, my lungs are likely to rupture, or that my heart will fail, or that something terrible would happen to me.

Then, on 6 May 1954, Roger Bannister (then, a 25-year-old British medical student) somehow managed to run a mile in 3 minutes 58 seconds. The barrier was broken! I believe Roger Bannister overcame that ‘social-conditioning’ by changing his language and a mental picture of himself, and actually saw (vividly imagined) himself breaking the barrier. He then went ahead and did it!

That set the stage for a new social-conditioning, and consequently, different inner-dialogue for the other athletes: “Roger has done it; that means it’s possible, and so I can do it too!” They began to have better self-images as a result. Just 6 weeks later, an Australian by name John Landy broke Roger Bannister’s record by 2 seconds, doing the mile in 3 minutes 56 seconds. Since then hundreds of athletes have run the mile in less than 4 minutes, including one by a 37-year-old man. It is recorded that in the June 1973 NCAA track meet events at Louisiana alone, 8 athletes ran the mile in less than 4 minutes. It was not that the length of a mile had been reduced, or that humans had all of a sudden gained a different biological structure; the barrier was hitherto, a mental one – existing only in the mind of the athletes. The only thing that changed was the athletes’ inner-diologue and consequently, self-image.

Seer, permit me to give another sports-related illustration of the powerful effect of self-image produced by inner-dialogue or neuro-linguistic programming…

A certain baseball team was the favourite of many because of the numerous outstanding hitters they had. Indeed they were tipped to win the pennant but as fate would have it, they lost 18 games out of the first 21 games; having lost all the first six games straight on! Rather than strategising, they blamed one another, and their plight worsened to the extent that, one day they played against the weakest hitting team in the league but lost the game, though they happened to be the team with the most talented hitters. That happened to be the first game in the series with this weakest hitting team. The second game was due the following day, and their manager knew too well that his men were physically sound, and were indeed the best hitters. Just about an hour to the start of the second game, he figured that the likely logical cause of the problem could be the players’ mindset. Guess what he did; he burst into the team’s clubhouse with enthusiasm and proclaimed:

Fellows, I’ve got the answer to our problems. Don’t worry about a thing. Give me your two best bats and I’ll be back with you before game time. We’re going to win this game today and we’re going to win the pennant.” Each player gave him his best two bats and he took them away in a wheelbarrow. He returned just five minutes before the start of the second game and announced to them with enthusiasm: “Fellows, we’ve got the problem solved. Don’t worry about a thing. I’ve been to Mr. Slater (a popular faith healer in the town reputed as a miracle worker) and he’s put his blessings on these bats. He says all we have to do is step up to the plate, take a cut and we’ll hit the ball. We’re going to win this game and we’re going to win the pennant. Don’t worry about a thing. Just go get ’em tigers!” Everything turned; they won the game and went on to win the pennant.

Clearly, Seer, it’s not so much as what was done to the bats, but rather what was done to the mindset of the players; because, really, what could the faith healer have changed about the wooden bats? Indeed, no one ever established whether Mr. Slater did see those bats, let alone touched them; no one could establish whether the manager did go to Mr. Slater in the first place. It was really the change in the mindset (attitude) of the players that yielded the results.

Dr. Emil Coue used positive inner-dialogue to improve the self-image of his patients at his clinic in Geneva Switzerland in 1895 and achieved outstanding results. He taught each of his patients to regularly repeat the phrase, “Every day in every way, I’m getting better and better.” Amazingly, his clinic began to experience cure rates as high as 500 percent greater than cure rates experienced by patients with similar illnesses at other clinics and hospitals throughout Europe. About 10 years later, a German medical doctor by name Johannes Schultz developed the technique further, combining relaxation, positive affirmations, and creative visualization to help patients reprogram their minds. He termed it ‘autogenic conditioning.’ The results were stunning! This technique is still being used today in various forms, especially in training top sportsmen at the Olympics level. You’ll soon discover that it is faith in action.

Every human being needs unconditional love, support and verbal encouragement to feel on top of the world, and to develop to be the best possible social being. Unfortunately, we live in a society where there are conditionalities attached to everything; ‘If you don’t do this, I won’t do that,’ ‘Because you did not do this, I’m not going to do that;’ etc. Added to this is the abundant shouting one gets at the least error on his or her part. When you are criticised, shouted at, punished, insulted, beaten, etc your mind ordinarily responds with negative inner-dialogue. This applies to anything that hurts your feelings (especially ones that make you feel unworthy; particularly, negative remarks about your physical appearance or personality in general, repeated ridicule and questioning of your abilities and intelligence). We live in a society where people are quick to pass judgement on you once you don’t do things the way they do theirs, once you don’t dress the way they dress, and once you don’t speak the way they speak, etc. Sadly some people may even judge you for being of a different ethnic persuation – how unfair! As this continues to happen, it may cause you to see yourself through the negative eyes of others. You’ll therefore be having a distorted image of the real you, and that’s where the problem of self-limiting attitudes (excuses) originates. In extreme cases you may be striving to want to be someone else.

Seer, let me apologise on behalf of all persons who have said or done things to harm you this way; they did it out of ignorance, and I implore you to forgive them, for they did not know what they were doing! In any case, the criticisms, punishments, insults, beatings, etc don’t matter so much in themselves; rather, it is how you interpret them to yourself and the extent to which you believe your interpretation, that has the greatest effect. Decades of psychological research has concluded that, your inner-dialogue determines how you feel more than any other single factor. That’s probably why Dr. Frank Crane says, “Our best friends and our worst enemies are the thoughts we have about ourselves.” This is because, “No one on the surface of this earth can make you feel inferior without your permission.”

Seer, do you feel uneasy or inwardly uncomfortable when you’re in the company of some people; or when you’re called upon to do something you’re not so much familiar with or used to? Do you feel uneasy or inwardly uncomfortable even at the mere thought of these situations? It’s because your perception of what the situation demands of you, is contrary to what your self-image is; they don’t match. You may experience stress and tension as a result. You are likely to do anything and everything possible (however weird, sometimes) just to avoid the situation. For instance, it is asserted that, if you happen to earn more money than your self-image matches, you will do everything possible to get rid of the difference. You’ll have an irresistible urge to go out and spend it, even if it means buying something you don’t really need or investing it in things you know little or nothing about, and essentially end up losing it so as to return to the state that matches with your self-image.

Learn from Thomas Edison that, “If you believe you can do a thing, or if you believe you cannot, in either case you are probably right.

W. Longenecker wrote, “If you think you are beaten, you are. If you think you dare not, you don’t. If you like to win, but you think you can’t, it is almost certain you won’t. If you think you’ll lose, you’ve lost. For out of the world we find that success begins with a person’s will. It’s all in the state of the mind. If you think you’re outclassed, you are. You’ve got to think high to rise; you’ve got to be sure of yourself before you can ever win a prize. Life’s battles don’t always go to the stronger woman or man, but sooner or later the one who wins is the one who thinks ‘I CAN!” In the words of Dr. John L. Mason, “No one can defeat you unless you first defeat yourself, and that, self-image sets the boundaries and limits of each of our individual accomplishments.” Indeed, “Science and psychology have isolated the one prime cause for success or failure in life. It is the hidden self-image you have of yourself;” in the words of Bob Proctor.

All these follow from the law of belief. Resolve therefore never to allow your mind to say anything negative about yourself. Resolve also, never to feed on any negative remarks made about you by another person; dismiss it as the person’s opinion, and never the truth. William James says, “The art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook.” However, if you testify that a particular negative remark is genuine (coming from someone who is constructively criticising because he or she genuinely wants you to improve) then, be grateful; count yourself lucky and work to improve yourself in that light.

Seer, don’t compare yourself unfairly and unrealistically with others; their possessions and their experiences. These people were once where you are now, except that they worked hard over a long period and eventually got to where they are now; so give yourself time and just work hard. It is a fact that the top 10 percent in society were once in the bottom 10 percent. They were some time ago, average people, living in average neighbourhoods, staying in average houses, perhaps without their own cars, or driving average cars, wearing average clothes, eating average foods, and having little or no recognition in society.  Ask any rich person about his or her beginnings, you’d be told a very humbling but interesting story! It is said that, “Overnight success takes 10 years.” Though the actual number of years could be less, or even more; the point is, allow yourself adequate time. Most especially don’t compare your worst features with someone else’s best features; that’d be highly unfair to yourself. Seer, the fact that somebody can do a particular thing better than you should not make you feel inferior; it only means that the other person has had more encounters with that particular thing than you have, perhaps because of circumstances. Note that, there are countless other things that you too can do better than this other person. Besides, you have the ability to learn to do what the other person can do. Just concentrate and put your best features to good use. Remember the parable of the talents!

The good news is that since your self-image exists in the mind only, you can easily change it. Have you ever set unrealistic targets for yourself in the past and failed to reach it?

If that is the case, there is the likelihood that you might not have really forgiven yourself, and so you might probably be seeing yourself as incapable in other areas as well. No! It’s not that you’re incapable; it’s just that you were overambitious. You were probably ‘using elementary skills to solve university problems.’ Do yourself a favour right here and right now; forgive yourself, and say with enthusiasm and conviction, “I like myself!” Don’t be afraid to say it often. It happended, and so what? And so forgive yourself and move on vowing never to allow such a situation again! You can’t change the past, but you can learn from it so it is a complete waste of time to be bugged down by ‘mistakes and failures’ of the past. The good book says: “If your conscience condemns you, know that God is greater than your heart and knows all things.” Let God take care of it; move on with your life in a positive direction as you leave the issue for God to deal with it.

Seer, your self-image started forming the very moment you started interacting with the world in your infancy, and it will continually be shaped throughout your life. As you do realise, the influences that affect your self-image are subtle, and so you need to pay careful attention, else you could be negatively influenced to develop a negative self-image without realising it.

Mike Dorizas recounts that, “If you drop a frog into a pan of hot water, the frog would immediately react to the heat by jumping out of the pan. But, if you carefully place the same frog in a pan of comfortably cold water, then slowly raise the temperature of the water a degree at a time, the frog will accept this change, perhaps without noticing it, and stay in the water until the heat kills it.” Always watch out for the slow rising temperature of social-conditioning, psychological theft, anti-social behaviours, and your inner-dialogue!

It’s important to have a good self-image; a healthy acceptance of yourself. In other words, esteem yourself; have a good self-esteem. Note however that, a good self-image is different from pride or arrogance; ‘I’m the best there is, and no other person matters!’ sort of thing. That’s not what I’m advocating; no! Just a healthy acceptance of your worthiness as a person created in the image of God.
