Are you happy with the way we, as a people, do things (or perhaps do not do things) in Ghana and Africa? Certainly Not! Generally there is a wide ‘execution gap’ in society; many people are either not committed to doing efficiently what they ought to, or that they effectively do what they ought not to. To put things in perspective, let’s ask ourselves:

1. Why is it that in spite of the numerous graduates produced by the Universities, Polytechnics, Training Colleges, and Technical & Vocational Schools in Ghana and Africa, the countries are still bedeviled with age old developmental problems such as indiscriminate littering, chocked gutters that lead to floods year after year, frequent power outages, lack of constant flow of pipe-borne water, roads that develop pot-holes in no time, driving attitude, and the rest of them?
2. Why is moral decadence, corruption and indiscipline, so prevalent in spite of the numerous preaching programmes and other educational campaigns particularly on radio and television; and though religious groups together form a whopping majority (about 84%) of the population?

These are just two of the many questions we could be asking, but the crux of the issue is: Why do these problems persist, and most importantly, what can we do to solve them?

The Root of Our Problems

OUR ‘EDUCATION’ – Formal schooling teaches just about 15 – 22% of what a person needs to be very effective or truly successful in life – even globally; that is ‘Partial Education.’ Prof. Sir, William Arthur Lewis once said, “Education and schooling are not the same thing. What goes on inside the schools are not always education, and the result may well be to reduce productive capacity rather than to increase it.”

Consequent Effect

Majority choose to pursue and live the pleasant life, rather than the meaningful life. This affects career choices so, about 80% of people reluctantly go to work every day. Any wonder why productivity is generally so low? Formal education is very important and indeed necessary; however, formal schooling alone is grossly inadequate!

Concluding Remarks…

We cannot continue to do the same things we have been doing and expect different results. The 78-85% factor happen to be so important to the extent that continuing to ignore them will inhibit our socio-economic development as a people, and on the other hand, implementing them on a wide scale will transform society for the better.
