Why Antibiotics Are Failing—And What You Can Do to Help–💡

Have you ever taken antibiotics to treat an infection and felt better? That’s the power of antibiotics— They help fight harmful germs (like bacteria) that cause diseases. But what happens is that at some point, these germs no longer respond to the antibiotics; they are no longer affected by the same antibiotics which hitherto could destroy or kill them. This situation is called antimicrobial resistance (AMR)—a serious problem that makes infections harder and more costly to treat.

Imagine getting an infection that does not respond to any of the common antibiotics💊 The only effective antibiotic for treatment costs between 1,800 and 2,100 GHC per day and the treatment duration spans 2 to 3 weeks. This happens when bacteria become hard to treat because only a few—usually, top-tier—drugs can fight them. Beyond that, additional expenses for other medications, multiple lab tests, and hospital admission further add to the burden That’s why preventing infections and using antibiotics wisely is crucial!

💊How Does AMR Happen? 🤔

Think of bacteria like enemies in a video game—each time they are exposed to antibiotics, some of them learn new ways to fight back and become stronger. When we overuse or misuse antibiotics, we give bacteria more chances to develop resistance, making the medicine less effective over time.

Some ways this happens include:

📍Taking antibiotics when they are not really needed (e.g., for viral infections like colds or flu, which usually resolve on their own at the action of the body’s immune system).
📍Not finishing a full course of antibiotics, thus allowing some bacteria to survive and become resistant.
📍 Indiscriminate use of antibiotics in farm animals can contribute to the spread of resistant bacteria to humans through food

💊Why Is AMR a Big Problem? 🚨

When bacteria become resistant, the medicines that once killed them no longer work. This means:
📍 Infections last longer and become harder to treat.
📍 Clinicians have to use stronger and more expensive medicines.
📍Simple infections can turn deadly if no antibiotics work.
📍Surgeries and cancer treatments become riskier.

💊How Can We Stop AMR? 🛡️

We can all help slow antimicrobial resistance by:

📍Taking antibiotics only when prescribed by a doctor.
📍Finishing the full course of medicine to kill all bacteria.
📍Not sharing antibiotics with others.
📍Encouraging responsible antibiotic use in farming.
📍Practicing good hygiene (like washing hands) to prevent infections.

AMR is a growing problem, but if we take smart actions today, we can preserve the effectiveness of the precious antibiotics for the future! 💪✨️

I use state-of-the-art phenotypic and whole-genome sequencing to understand the epidemiology of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria species isolated from humans, livestock, and the environment. Specifically, I study superbugs like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria, with an overall goal of tackling antimicrobial resistance in Ghana and on the African continent. Contributing to raising the next generation of scientists/workforce to tackle AMR: -via training of laboratory staff from the human and animal health sectors to correctly identify bacteria species, perform standard antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and use molecular tools/free online databases to detect AMR and virulence genes. -Training of undergraduate and postgraduate students in the field of bacteriology and AMR I co-manage StaphnetAfrica, a network of African researchers and UK collaborators working on Staphylococcus aureus: www.staphnetafrica.org I founded Women In Biomedicine, Africa, an organization born out of a passion to provide mentorship and career guidance for young women in biomedical careers and to harness their skills to significantly improve health care in Africa: www.wibafrica.org I am also the co-founder of the Seers Foundation, an Extreme Human Resource Development Non-Governmental Organization that is committed to grooming humanity for excellence and raising exceptional doers. So in the diagram, how many squares did you make out in total; how many squares are there?

Well, most people get or give 16 as their answer. Some get 17 and a few get 21; and that’s at least better than the ‘16’ answer majority of people give. Just about 1 percent of people surveyed get the best answer; which is…
