A Case For Career Guidance to be Stepped Up
First of all, let us get to appreciate the difference between Profession, and Career.
Profession: “A vocation requiring some specific knowledge (i.e., knowledge of some department of learning, or a department of science)” e.g., Teaching (Occupation: Teacher, etc.), or Medicine (Occupation: Doctor, etc.).
So being professional implies that a standardised set of practices are followed in orderly sequence from the first step to the last in order to arrive at the best advice under the particular circumstances.
Career: “A job for which you are trained and in which it is possible to advance during your working life, so that you get greater responsibility and earn more money.”
The financial demands on you will increase (likely at a fast pace) as the years go by, and you must of a necessity meet your personal needs (such as those of housing, feeding, school, education, etc) and the need of your dependents too. In essence, you must make progress in your work life with the objective of earning more money as the years go by.
Job vrs Career: Job (or Occupation) – the work you do for a living at any particular time in the short to medium term. Career – comprises all the various jobs you may have to do throughout your working life (long term).
Now, did you know that of all the people that go to work everyday, 82 out of 100 (82%) wish they didn’t have to go to work; mostly because they do not truly enjoy their work? It’s therefore not surprising that the BBC has indicated that ‘work-related stress disorders’ are on the increase? Very alarming!
One major cause of the above is that, Career Guidance is not given much attention in our upbringing. Therefore, a lot of people end up in professions they are not really cut for and have to work extra hard to keep up, or otherwise under-perform; with the attendant consequences as outlined above.
Time With Our Future
The other Sunday was Career Day for the Children Service Ministry, and I was invited to guide them; so among other insights, I talked about the 6 Personality Types and the kinds of occupation recommended for each personality type (if one wants to achieve the greatest career fulfillment without burning out; as extensive research has outlined)
It was such an exciting time, and among the questions that they asked, there was this particular one that came from a very unassuming young girl of about 9yrs of age; she asked: “What do you do when you find yourself in an occupation that you don’t like/enjoy but then it pays you a lot of money?”
The key lesson I picked was that, we’ve been underestimating the children and probably neglecting to guide them early enough; if at all. Let’s do the difficult things whilst it is easy; let’s help the children to avoid the waiting stress in finding themselves in occupations that do not match their personalities. The Common/Mediocre Paths to Careers
In the absence of proper career guidance, a lot of people are left to yield to the following common (often mediocre) influences or routes to career choices:
- Parents either thrusting their profession on their wards; or otherwise directing their wards as to what to choose, often based solely on financial prospects.
- Choosing one course, and being given another; due to lack of the required grades and/or space.
- Some look at the lifestyle of people in society, and based on their affluence, decide to choose similar/same professions.
- For some, anything goes.
But this should not be so! People should be guided to make informed choices in their professions/careers so that they can truly enjoy their careers and adult life, and still make adequate money to meet their needs, and also make significant contribution towards the development of society, and the world; without burning out or being too stressed.
The Golden Path to Ideal Profession/Career
Fortunately, there has been adequate research to understand the various human personality traits found on earth, and the corresponding professions most suited for the respective personality types; for maximum satisfaction and productivity.
